For a heavy minute, The'ara thought long and hard about that back door. It was tempting. If she hadn't left her lute and her cloak back at the table with Chezlar, she might have found herself back on the road again, where it was safe.
But then Jerri's words sunk in through her panic. Ducking her head, still clutching the stupid plate to her chest, she murmured, "I felt like he rejected me just now."
She lifted her head and gave Jerri a grateful smile. "I'll be fine. It's stupid, really. Thank you."
Not wanting to be a further bother, she moved down the line and helped herself to a sliver of turkey, potatoes, and gravy. She stared at the stupid cake before passing it up. A quick peek at Chezlar told her, assuming she wasn't rejected earlier, whatever chance she might have had was blown. Figures.
Forcing herself to smile, she returned to their table, but she didn't know what to say.
