The Changeling was quiet for a long moment. No one had ever asked him that before. "I have never known anything else," he admitted, "it is coded in to my genetics to be what I am."
He looked down at their hands, hers so tiny in his and reached over to stroke a finger across the back of hers. "There are moments that I love, there are moments I do not. I am... content in my captivity."
He had to be. A single rebellious moment had cost the lives of both of children. A god in chains, the universe had its checks and balances. He could destroy a planet or create one, and that power was dangerous in the hands of just one being. He had to be unshakably loyal... And obedient.
