Helen's smile was slightly strained, her mind bouncing between anxiety and relief that she wasn't in Paul's clutches any more.
"He thought he had me nice and placid and believing the lies he fed me - that he helped me escape, that he loved me, that I was safe with him. He dropped his guard when he found out I was expecting, and I found out exactly what was going on, hence the panic jump. Which is also a really bad idea when you're pregnant, but needs must."
She'd reassured herself she'd done no real harm to the twins as they'd been talking, having somehow shielded them from the usual side-effects of extending her telekinesis beyond its usual limits.
Thank heavens for small mercies, she'd thought to herself.
